History of Knoxville, TN
The history of Knoxville, TN is long and rich. Beginning in 1786, James White, the founder of Knoxville, TN, established his home here. The community was soon renamed to Knoxville and made the capital of the Southwest Territory. Around 1794, The University of Tennessee was built. In the 1800's, the citizens of Knoxville started to put its river access, railroad connections, and convenient location to good use eventually becoming one of the leading distribution centers in the south. These features made Knoxville a highly contested area during the American Civil War.
